Therefore, this lead back to the inspiration I recieved from our preliminary task song and genre being 'fun; we are young'. This band are classed as indie pop, and their songs are up to beat and consist of all relevant connotations expected.

Reasons for Change In Genre:
The reasons for our change from acoustic genre to indie pop genre, is due to the expectations expected of acoustic, which we feel as a group we could not meet. The acoustic genre consists of very simple instruments that create a simple sound, with not much variation and change to it. Along with the mise-en-scene such as the lighting is very dull and boring and we felt as a group we would find problems when filming this and trying to potray the connotations of the acoustic genre. Therefore, when listing to the possible song options on www.unsigned.com, we found that the acoustic songs were too slow, and we felt as a group we would not be able reach our full potential doing this genre of music.
Therefore, this lead back to the inspiration I recieved from our preliminary task song and genre being 'fun; we are young'. This band are classed as indie pop, and their songs are up to beat and consist of all relevant connotations expected.

Postmodernism Is a Shortcut to Mass Audience (Discuss)
Postmodernism can be described as a collection of various meanings and definitions which can be applied to various contexts. Postmodernism can be described as old and new, along with oringinal and un-orginial. Possibly could even be said to be similar to other things but completely different at the same time.
Postmodernism has only actually been around since the 1900s, when the theme modern was transformed into postmodern. Postmodernism actually refers back to events that have happened however, see's them in a different light looking at them at a different angle.
When looking at post modernism you have to focus on what came before, the stage we are at now.
Therefore, there is a continous theory that postmodern theorists apply to this method this, theory states that there is a stage for each e.g. the experiment stage, which is known as the first stage is used establishing trends. Then we move on to the next stage which is the cannon stage, this is when we work on the new trend to establish it into a cultural context and understanding. Therefore, the last stage being the postmodern stage looks at what has already happened and adds that little bit more to it to finally complete the process of the stages.

Therefore, the last stage being the postmodern stage looks at what has already happened and adds that little bit more to it to finally complete the process of the stages.
An example of the experiment stage would be;
Bob Dylan’s video of Subterranean
home blues' is a perfect
example of showing the experiment stage.
The video was
produced in 1960, at the point in which music videos were not that upcoming
instead short films were produced, which consisted of one single shot, the film
producers were not as imaginative as they are today. Therefore, this music
promo video has stuck to the nature and connotations of what already exists out
there. However, they have added their own little twists to it to define itself,
and to establish its own identity. The idea of the lyrics being shown on the
cards represents the loss of miming within the music video. As an audience
after watching the latest current thing, being the short films which contained
non diegetic sound and miming to then move to non-diegetic sound without miming
is taking a step away from what is expected and what is the 'norm'. There are no editing effects used atall within the promo video therefore, the viewer is just focused on the artist themselves rather than editing effects that cause the viewers eye to drift however, this could have a negative effective as the audience may become bored of non exsistent content occuring. The
mise-en-scene of the video being in black and white emphasises on the
experiment stage due to wanting to break away from colour, which already existed,
the film producers obviously wanted to do something different to catch the
attention of the target audience. This is clear to say that they achieved this.
An example of the cannon stage would be;
Queens 'Bohemian Rapcidy' is an example of the cannon stage due to the the trend of the actors miming now, instead of not miming. Also the joining together of not one artist but four individuals knocks out bob dylans sterotypical one person band. The shot below shows an editing effect used of all four band members faces being blended together to represent an individual face, made out of four faces. Therefore, this is a step up from the first stage as we are moving into a new generation of editing.
The mise-scene is a dark background this instantly makes the artists faces stand out due to the fact they are in colour and obviously attain the attention of the audiences eye. Close up and mid shots are used to a great extent however, extreme close ups are only really used on shots of attention to detail e.g. shot of artists fingers playing the guitar. The costumes worn are all of significant bright colours e.g. all in white contrasted to a black, this is obviously to higlight the artists. However, to do this they could have used other colours than white, which would still have been as effective.
An example of the postmodernism stage would be;
Micheal Jackson 'thriller' is an example of the postmodern stage as it moves up another stage in editing, mise-en-scene etc. Firstly the lighting and colour scheme used has moved up a gear from bohemian rhapsody, due to the artist being placed infront of a black background but wearing more colourful clothes than just plain white. The editing effects used are visual effects e.g. micheal jackson turns into a vampire therefore, in one shot he has enlightened green eyes and fangs.
The mise-en-scene being the costumes are more updated and creative, rather than just the simplistic designs in the cannon stage. There are more variation in the shot types e.g. establishing shots of the location of the mise-en-scene. The movement of the characters is more varied Micheal Jackson is seen to be dancing and moving around while in the cannon stage the artists were just stationary. The editing effects such as fog is used to create the effect of a mystery occuring, the location is potrayed to be scary due to the nature of the content. The location then moves to the graveyard where smoke/fog editing is also continued. The dancing used within the peice, is more up to date and extravagant than the cannon stage due to the upgrade and evolution in postmodernism.
Therefore, postmodernism moves into a new era and with this came intertexuality. Intertexuality is the coming together of two different texts including manipulation of one text contrasted to another possibly even mimiking the text. There are three types of intertexulity the first being Homage, this is when imitation is classed as the highest form of flattery. The second form of flattery is Pastiche, this is when the use of imagery of one text is contrasted to another. The third stage is Parody, this is when the artist completely takes the mikey out of another text.

20th Century Art Movements:
Expressionism:
Expressionism was a modernist movement which origintaed in Weimar Germany (post WW1). This period was when Germany had no money and no nothing due to inflation going of the scale.
The artists next paintings during this period, focused on sharp angles and shadows highlighting the darker side. Some say these reflect the depressed phsychological nature of each and every member of the country during this hard finanical breakdown and turmoil.

The other side:
'Capturing the other'
This theory is used with mirror/doors/windows etc, to put into perspective that when looking into a reflection you do not actually see the person, you see another side of a person.
An example that represents this is; 'Red Hot Chilli Peppers - 'Otherside'
Surrealism:

Surrealism:
Surrealism is a cultural movement that began in the 1920s, where it was its most popular in France and Spain. It is recognised for its visual artworks and writings. Surrealist work juxtaposes unexpected objects/things that create an element of supprise.
e.g. the fish are in the sky juxtaposed to the sky in the bowl. They are swapped.
Pop Art:
Pop art emerged in the 1950s in Britian. Pop art presented a challenge to stereotypical traditons of art and classical subjects. This is due to material being visually removed from its known context and combined with un-relevant material. Pop art includes most its subjects from comtempory culture and presents them in a gimiky comic book style.
An example of a pop art music promo video would be; 'Beyonce - Countdown'

Post Modernism: Notes
What is post modernism?
Postmodernism is percieved as old and new, original and un-original.
In the early 1900s, modern developed into post modern.
Postmodernism refers to things that have already happened but refers back to them while looking at them in a different way.
How can we apply this theory to the history of music:
Experiment stage: Bob Dylan
Cannon stage: Bohemian Rapcidy
Postmodernism stage: Interpreation of a zombie in Micheal Jackson: 'thriller'.
Therefore, post modernism moves into a new era.
Intertexuality is the coming together of two different texts. It includes a manipulation of one text refered to another, possibly even mimicked.
There are three types of intertexuality:
Michael Jackson; 'Smooth Criminal'
Postmodernism is percieved as old and new, original and un-original.
In the early 1900s, modern developed into post modern.
Postmodernism refers to things that have already happened but refers back to them while looking at them in a different way.

- The experiment stage of genre is to establish trends e.g experiment on post modern.
- The cannon stage works within those trends to fix them into our cultural understanding.
- The postmodern stage looks at those trends, laughs at them, pokes them with a big stick and adds something new and different to them.
- Therefore, this creates a new experiment stage, and we go back around the circle.
How can we apply this theory to the history of music:
Experiment stage: Bob Dylan
Cannon stage: Bohemian Rapcidy
Postmodernism stage: Interpreation of a zombie in Micheal Jackson: 'thriller'.
To this day, it is argued that various music videos are a post modern stage of evolution of cinema theatrics.
Therefore, post modernism moves into a new era.
- Postmodernism becomes the 'new' by refering to the 'old'.
- Postmodernism in invented by copying.
- Postmodernism can be created by humerous of terrifying content.
- Can be created by anyone.

Will Young- 'Switch It on'
- Parody (Basically taking the mickey)

Controversial videos:
There were a few music promo videos that ruffled a few feathers due to there explicit content e.g. excessive sexual references and awkward scenes due to sex being portrayed in a very open way to the audience, as if it was seen acceptable when in fact it was shon upon.
An example of these was Eric Prydz; 'Call on me'
Another music video that ruffled a few feathers in religious groups was Madonna's video of 'like a prayer'.
This image shows Madonna situated in front of burning crosses, in the background of the mise-en-scene behind her. Therefore, to religious believers of all backgrounds, to burn the symbol of their God, represents them burning their believe within their God.This point emphasises and links to reasoning that burning a cross could be representing the KKK, as they decided to take this action also. Therefore, this would create further anger to religious believers against the KKK.
This image of Madonna to the right, also created controversy due to the fact that this song has strong connotations to religion, yet it is also linking to sexual aspects e.g. due to the clothing she is wearing. Therefore, as God is seen as pure and innocent linking that to the raunchiness and darkness of the sexual aspect is juxtaposing the two together. Therefore, creating further confusion and mystery to what the music video is actually trying to signify and what message it is trying to portray to the audience.
An example of these was Eric Prydz; 'Call on me'
- Within the work out shown, all movements were seen to be over-exaggerated and emphasised on when touching certain body areas.
- The mise-en-scene such as costumes were very tight and revealing.
- The hair and make-up used could be described as 'bed hair. Which therefore, appeals to the male generation.
- The facial expressions on the dancers faces would attract male attention due to the almost flirty nature of their expressions used.

Therefore, this would create further anger to religious believers against the KKK.
Therefore, the next image of the black Jesus completely confuses and puzzles the audience due to the fact the KKK were against any other race apart from pure English. Therefore, this makes the audience think deeper into the actual meaning of this piece.

Inspirations on genre chosen for our music video:
We have chosen acoustic genre for our music video.
Acoustic music is made up and consisted of instruments, which produce very simple but powerful and meaningful sounds, rather than just your normal electrical instruments that create artificial sound. Artists performing while using acoustic instruments need to amplify the volume coming from their instruments, which is why am amplifier is used to create this. An example of this would be placing a microphone in front of their guitar. However, the amplified device still remains separate from the acoustic instrument.
Therefore, the increase in popularity of a television show called 'MTV unplugged' in the 1990s, which contained a vast number of acoustic performances by various artists, who did not normally rely on electronic instruments enabled them to be called 'unplugged' performances.
Connotations of the acoustic genre:
Some examples of acoustic performances would be:
Corrinne Bailey Rae; 'Put your records on'
Adele - 'Someone like you'

Connotations of the acoustic genre:
- The mise-en-scene for acoustic videos tends to be located in isolated distant locations away from any other life form. This could be due to the artist wanting to reflect on their life story.
- The camera angles and shots are focused mainly on the artist, this is also used to create complete focus on the artist. Therefore, rather than focusing on possible drama and jump cuts between action shots within the video. There are slow moving shots e.g. establishing shots following the artist around the location as the song develops. There is a vast use of close up shots and extreme close ups, this is to escape into the characters emotions and feelings. The camera position consistently enables the eye line match to meet the audience and the artist. This is used to make the audience feel as if we are of the same importance as the artist.
- The lighting of the mise-en-scene is normally either completely bright and captivating or dull and boring. This is due to the bright lighting represents the location of the artist, and the significance it holds. However, the dark dull lighting makes the artist stand out more compared to its bleak background.
- The props used within the mise-en-scene are kept to a minimal, only very significant things are placed within the background. However, in most cases nothing is placed within the background.
- There is no non diegetic sound used within the piece. All sound used is diegetic sound that is already there e.g. the artist singing.
Some examples of acoustic performances would be:
Corrinne Bailey Rae; 'Put your records on'
Adele - 'Someone like you'
James Morrison -'Broken strings'
Jason Mraz - 'I'm yours'
Conventions of a digi-pack And a Magazine Cover:
Digipack:
A digipack opens up as a book style packaging with different sections for different compartments according to what its relevant to. A digipack could possible include special features such as a DVD of special effects or a miniature booklet of pictures/information on the artist/artists. Some digipacks are part of a collective edition which therefore, will hold more value to that item. Digipacks can physically hold more than other possible storage devices for Cd's e.g. an ordinary CD case.

Pro's of a digipack:
- Aesthetically pleasing to the eye, the images and colouring are eye catching to the intended audience.
- The digi-packs are made out of shatterproof material. Therefore, this reduces the risk of damage to them meaning they will not crack.
-They are produced in bulk production therefore, making them easy and cheap to produce, benefiting the producers of these items vastly.
-The layout of the packaging makes the material used, easy to put graphics onto it therefore, useful for displaying important graphics.
-The digipack accommodates every sort of need for the product, making it safe, accessible and a good quality purchase.
- If done correctly and professionally can be an innovative premium product.
-This item is better and more beneficial than your average CD case, due to the fact there is more excess room for information and visual effects to be on display.
-The simple packaging design makes it more possible for other various design options rather than sticking to boring and basic designs.
-The product is a bespoken problem with various possibilities.
-Although more expensive than cheaper CD holders, they are up to a better standard of quality.
Con's of a digipack:
-Digipacks are prone to tearing or ripping in parts of the packaging.
-The plastic teeth, being the CD holders could possibly break.
-Digipacks are more expensive than other CD holders.
-After having this item for a certain period of time, it could start to look old and ragged and not in its state it was first purchased in.
-CD's will fall out if any of the inner packaging breaks due to there would be nothing to hold it in anymore.
-The packing e.g. trays could break or come away from the other packaging meaning you would have an imperfect item.
What needs to be considered when creating a digipack?
Coldplay: 'Viva La Vida'
This digipack design for Coldplay is very simplistic on two of the four image slides. The colouring being, just plain black. This could suggest that the artists do not want to give to much away therefore, are playing on the audiences imagination and making them think into further depth, about what the album could be representing. However, the two slides that do contain imagery are complete opposites away one has animated figures and the other has the members of there. Therefore, this acts a promotional gimmick promoting them as artists, making the viewer aware of who they are, what they do and what they are all about. It is also very conventional and stereotypical due to the fact it clearly states in many a slides the artists, the name of the album and the songs on the CD.
Katy Perry 'Teenage Dream'
The digipack design for Katy perry is very relevant to the CD such as the cover, images etc, it all ties in together effectively to create an esthetically pleasing eye catching CD digipack. The CD disk cover does not stick to the stereotypical boring dark shades, the out there inventive designs put this creation a mile ahead of dull plain designs. In the music industry, nudity is seen as a taboo and frowned upon. Therefore, this CD digipack could create controversy. However, any publicity is good publicity therefore, the producers have been very smart in the production process of this item.
Magazine Covers:
Magazine adverts/covers have very similar connotations as Digipacks. This is due to them needing a main image or images of the artists which therefore, acts a promotional gimmick which relates back to advertising the group, in order to get recognition to hopefully enable an increase in sales revenue. Usually information about the tour dates/latest album or single is added to keep the viewer intrigued and interested as to when the next instalment will be coming out. The name of the artists and each individual member is needed, along with the name of the next album name. The next tour date and the costing of the tickets may also be added to the magazine advert.
This magazine cover contains everything essentially needed e.g. the name of the band, the name of the album and the status of when the album will, or if not it has already been released. This magazine cover is eye catching, its unique and individual from anything else i have ever seen. Therefore, this means the intended audience will pay more attention to it. The colour editing used is between neutral and filter lights which give it the extra edge to other boring magazine covers that will just be dismissed and not paid much attention to by its intended audience.
This magazine cover contains more essential connotations needed, it really sticks to the criteria set by the expectations of the intended audience. It establishes the name of the band, the album title and the release dates of two different instalments. However, it does not show a picture of the band therefore, it creates mystery to the advert. The black and white colour represent traditional aspects however, the different and various font choices represent the versatility within the group. The bird shown within the title editing effects represents becoming free, as the bird is seen to be moving away. Therefore, this could show the band breaking free from stereotypical conventions showing they are different from the other bands out there.
Breaking music promo's:
1970s:
'Jackson 5- I Want You Back'
1980s:
Irene Cara; 'Flashdance What A Feeling'
Music video originally from the film 'flashdance', this spectacular hit music video was a shortcut preview into what could be expected in the actual film.
There are a vast amount of establishing shots, to show the location of the mise-en-scene. The location of the mise-en-scene is set in a partially lonely and isolated part of America, possibly on the outskirts of New York City. This is effective due to the lyrics it the song 'what a feeling', this shows how the artist feels when they are where they are e.g. on their own thinking about the world.
Editing effects such as filter lights are added to create a more obvious lighting e.g. this occurs on the shot of the water when a pan is used from the bottom to the top of the screen.
Throughout the duration of the song we are following the character on their bicycle to various locations therefore, as an audience we feel as if we are going on this journey with them.
This music video also challenges stereotypical gender roles due to us expecting the character using the machinery, of which is on fire, to be a male. However, we are surprised when we see that it is actually a women.
Another editing effect such as fog is used to highlight the artist and make them stand out, in a form create an essence about them which attracts us as an audience to them.
The shot then moves to a dance bar where a dancer is provocatively dancing for an audience, this could have potentially caused some controversy due to it being seen as taboo and frowned upon in the music industry.
Editing effects are also used to show the artists shadows to represent the importance of themselves to the audience and use this effect as an advertising technique to promote themselves.
1990s:
Dido; 'White Flag'
Firstly, the establishing shot of the mise-en-scene, shows the setting to be in a sense pop art, due to its strong connotations e.g. objects being visually removed from its known context and combined with un-related material. Everything is seen to be as if it has just been put there with no relevance.
The performance side of the video is when we see the artist from behind performing, we as an audience cannot see the audience at the gig, we can assume that there is a pretend audience.
The editing effects used is of a filter colour to separate colours of the artists hair seen in a extreme close up, where the artists eye line is at the same as the audience to represent the equal aspect between us and the artist.
The mise-en-scene then moves to the artist's bedroom (or supposed bedroom in the video) and the clothing she wears is casual. Therefore, this sets a carmful and relaxed vibe to the music video.
The video mainly consists of narrative, due to the song minimally relating back to lyrics but not completely due to the lyrics representing letting go whereas, the narrative links to a love story between the artist and the other main character.
Another editing effect used is of fade in/fade outs and the putting together of two separate clips in one shot to represent the fading of time and the two different types of action that happened that link in together. The clip looks as if the two main characters are looking at each other, when in fact they are looking through each other. Which therefore, shows the darker side in the relationship that they had.
2000:
Britney Spears 'Toxic' (2004)
Firstly, this video is defined as ground breaking as well as controversial due to Britany Spears take on the modern day air hostess, in which she completely glams the costume up to be revealing and eye catching and acts in a way/mannerism that would be seriously frowned upon in that industry.
Editing effects such as filter lights are used throughout the duration of the music video. This could be used to highlight the artist and make them stand out due to the bright background they are situated in front of.
The video then cuts to the other scene being where the artist is placed on the floor in a very out there provocative body con all in one suit, leaving not much to the imagination. The artist is also placed in front of a bright white light which obviously makes them stand out and seem of some importance.
The lighting effects really emphasises on promoting and advertising the artist.
The air hostess clothing worn is nothing remotely similar to what your normal everyday air hostess would wear, the excessive bling e.g. jewellery would never be accepted in the working environment.
The shot then moves to the artist being placed in a inner city urban environment in which she is portrayed to be racing against time on the back of a motorcycle with her stereotypical 'hottie'.
Fast paced is used to speed up time and show the progression of time occurring. This is used when the artist is on the back of a motorcyclist moving towards her future, as she is is portrayed to be over eager to get there.
Another editing effect placed in the video is the ball of exploding fire the artist is portrayed to be walking away from. This shot shows the artist to be indestructible and so powerful nothing can touch her.
The look shown on the artists face especially on her eyes is determination which makes us an audience believe her story and reason with her.
*In all music videos it is important to show the artists eyes to see the emotion they are trying to portray to the audience.
A shot is shown of the word 'TOXIC' which instantly relates back to the lyrics of the song.
Therefore, the green liquid she places in the characters mouth, emphasises she is portraying she is a women on a misson, who will kill anyone who gets in her way.
The variation in wig choices the artist attains makes us as an audience realise her versatile character she is representing.
Recents:
Lady Gaga Ft Beyonce; 'Telephone'
'Jackson 5- I Want You Back'
Firstly, the mise-en-scene such as the clothing worn is unique, individual and out there. However, although all the designs are similar there is still slight variation between each member of the band. Therefore, this shows the individual personalities and differences between the band members.
The mise-en-scene such as the location where the music video is set, is very casual and laid back setting e.g. it is portrayed to be in a gym or some kind of performance or dance set.
The bands mannerism's and body language such as their movements and actions are very traditional and stereotypical such as their dance moves are all in unison and perfected to a tee.
There is a vast usage of close up shots to establish and make it clear to the audience the emotions and feelings the artist is trying to portray.
However, it is recognisable that there is no narrative to this piece, only performance. It is also shown that the camera does not move around e.g. establishing shots of the mise-en-scene or to show other artists within the band, it only focuses on the artist singing at that current time.
This is when it is realised just how much music videos to this day have evolved and become so much bigger and better than the traditional first ever music videos and the characteristics they had.

Lady Gaga and Beyonce's take on this music video, took the audiences expectations to a whole new level. This is due to:
The mise-en-scene, which is first set at a prison, from the beginning it looks like a stereotypical setting which is then followed by the eerie and dramatic non diegetic sound added which builds up gradually increasing the tension. The audience can automatically predict the scenario of what situation will occur and what will happen.
However, the clothing of the other prisoners is nothing to be expected. This mise-en-scene of the prison inside and out exceeds every norm of what is expected within a scenario like this.
Extreme eye catching features used within this piece:
- Cigarettes used as sunglasses.
- Chains used as costumes
- Hair rollers used out of coke cans.
- 'Caution' warning tape used as clothing.
- Blue telephone used as a hat.
From the prison to the cafe, which they carry out there homicide. The eye catching bright outfits/dancing and role play of two artist is what keeps the audiences attention constantly drawn to the screen.
Maroon 5; 'She Will be Loved'
This pop promo music video was seen as ground breaking due to the audience expected the love song he was singing was bound to be to his younger girlfriend. When if fact he was singing it about his older mistress, being his mothers girlfriend.
Therefore, this then got rid of the stereotypical assumption that younger men are not attracted to older women. An example of this being shown is through the older women's clothing shown being the red dress which has strong connotations of lust and desire. Therefore, this juxtaposed to the younger girls clothing being black dark colours representing dull and boring. Therefore, this shows the personalities and characters of our two main female characters and how we as an audience, expect their clothing to be associated to the other character. This could be why the male leading character chose the older female to the younger female.

The era of pop promo videos:
Mike Nesmith
was the first person to have an idea for promo based cable TV. This would
enable him to fill an entire network with various promo music videos for twenty
four hours a day. This is today known as music promos number one destination
MTV.
However, it
is rumoured and considered that by some people, that the actual first release
and played first promo video was actually by Queen being their
track 'Bohemian Rhapsody', due to it having
strong connotations of conventional pop.
This was
due to the fact it consisted of:
- Nonlinear stage performance, which
showed cinematic representation.
- The mise-en-scene showed matching
costumes which defined uniformity about the members being of all same
importance.
- The editing effects being the smoke
and lightning used had actually been created at the present time,
rather than being added afterwards.
- The idea of a live performance at one of there gigs really emphasises on advertising and promoting the artists. However, this then makes the audience consider and debate over whether there was actually a real audience. Or as to whether, the producers used a diegetic audience to pretend there was actually one there.
The rise of MTV:
- MTV was established and attained the name it has today in 1981.
- It grew and gained excessive media attention especially in the USA.
- The early audience viewers were drawn to the aesthetically pleasing eye catching demographics used to grab the viewers attention.
- The layout, representation and colours led to a dominating male rock genre, featuring mainly white acts.
- RnB pop genre had not yet been established at this period of time, which instantly cancelled out the racism questions which were asked after dominant gender being broad casted.
1980's:
Duran Duran:' wild boys'
This video changed
the way that producers who produced simplistic videos with minimum spending
budgets thought. Therefore, this led to move onto the next generation of excessive
out there video editing/effects/locations that exceeded all audience's expectations.
Duran Duran’s
video cost $1 million, the most money spent on a singular video to date.
Production
budgets soared leading to a new generation of pop videos.
MTV friendly?
'Micheal Jackson; 'Thriller'
This video changed some peoples perspectives and views on the racism argument which was brought up in earlier years when MTV broad casted only one dominate race. Although this was justified as RnB pop had not yet been established at this time period.
- It appeared the street lamps were the only source of lighting. Or was this an effect that there was actually more lighting, it just appeared to the audience that this was the only source of lighting used?
- Big emphasis on the make up looking realistic and believable.
- Typical mise-en-scene for thriller genre pop promo video e.g. mise on scene set at an abandoned house.
- Mise-en-scene being the clothing used dark tattered clothing representing the dark side.
- The video showed self reflexivity, this meaning we know that we are in a show/ production.
MTV Unfriendly?
This period was when the Rap/Rnb genre came into action.
- It appeared that black rap videos were being ignored by the majority of the intended audience. Therefore, this suggested that this type of genre only specifically target a niche market.
- The spending budgets for these videos were at a minimum. This could have possibly caused anger, and more tension between the racism argument due to the artists feeling neglected and not the the same importance. However, because their style of genre was new this may have been the reason for their low budget videos.
- The videos showed strong connotations of threatening content e.g. gangster rap lyrics.
- However, the duo between Areosmith/Dme 'walk this way' provided cross over between the two races and broke this supposed white dominac.
OSCARS?
By 1984, MTV producers and directors of music videos were getting nominated for Oscars for there production and diversity within their music videos. This is due to the fact in theory a music video is a brief intro into a movie. It enables the same amount of work and planning to enable to the get the best overall production.
THE PRESENT:
To this date, music videos can be distributed via u-tube, Itunes, mobiles devices etc. There is also a wider used of genre based channels which cater for different niche markets.
Comparing three types of media videos:
(Set in the
1960's) Bob Dylan 'Subterranean home blues'
- One continuous shot
- Artists/actor did not mime.
Therefore, could possibly make the audience feel uncomfortable due to the
fact it is not the norm, as the stereotype pop promo video will
have actors miming to the song.
- It has a sense of being unique from
any other stereotypical due to it breaking all boundaries of what is
expected, and what is done.
- Emphasising on lyrics rather than
the imagery and narrative side of things.
- No edits used at all.
- No colour used, black and white
theme.
- Simplistic as possible meaning it is
breaking all illusions about the song meaning various different things.
(Broad casted
on 'Steady Go' and 'Top of the Pops') Beatles- 'Strawberry
fields'
- Various shot used, not just
one shot.
- Blue edits portrayed which is due to
the use of filters.
- Big emphasise on colour. Colours
stick out on dark dual background, focusing the eye of the audience on the
aesthetically pleasing imagery.
- There is a use of the edit reverse
within the piece. However, the artist is actually walking backwards in
reverse in the hope to portray the edit that it is actually being reversed
when it is not.
- The name of the song 'strawberry
fields' could be seen as a metaphor with various other meanings towards
it. Rather than the obvious one of its connections towards drugs usage, this
is why the artists are acting in the way that they are.
- The editing effect dissolve is
used on the artist faces to create an illusion of disjunction.
- Mise-en-scene is portrayed through
the contrast in different forms of lighting used within the piece.
- Disjointed aspect of it due to the
fact nothing is linked everything seems as if it has just been placed
there with no relevant meaning to anything else.
- Genre used could be seen as the era of 'hippies'. This is due to the fact the outfits, layout, lighting and mise-en-scene all has strong connotations of this.
The monkees- 'A little bit me, a little bit you'
- The monkees were the first constructed band
- There music and videos were what set the scene and conventions of what should be expected for music promos e.g. editing, wacky comedy and never-ending action.
- The video portrayed an idea of surrealism.
- This band were the first to introduce the idea of telling a story within a music video e.g. narrative.
