Comparing three types of media videos:

(Set in the 1960's) Bob Dylan 'Subterranean home blues'

  • One continuous shot
  • Artists/actor did not mime. Therefore, could possibly make the audience feel uncomfortable due to the fact it is not the norm, as the stereotype pop promo video will have actors miming to the song.
  • It has a sense of being unique from any other stereotypical due to it breaking all boundaries of what is expected, and what is done.
  • Emphasising on lyrics rather than the imagery and narrative side of things.
  • No edits used at all.
  • No colour used, black and white theme.
  • Simplistic as possible meaning it is breaking all illusions about the song meaning various different things.

(Broad casted on 'Steady Go' and 'Top of the Pops') Beatles- 'Strawberry fields'

  • Various shot used, not just one shot.
  • Blue edits portrayed which is due to the use of filters.
  • Big emphasise on colour. Colours stick out on dark dual background, focusing the eye of the audience on the aesthetically pleasing imagery.
  • There is a use of the edit reverse within the piece. However, the artist is actually walking backwards in reverse in the hope to portray the edit that it is actually being reversed when it is not.
  • The name of the song 'strawberry fields' could be seen as a metaphor with various other meanings towards it. Rather than the obvious one of its connections towards drugs usage, this is why the artists are acting in the way that they are.
  • The editing effect dissolve is used on the artist faces to create an illusion of disjunction.
  • Mise-en-scene is portrayed through the contrast in different forms of lighting used within the piece.
  • Disjointed aspect of it due to the fact nothing is linked everything seems as if it has just been placed there with no relevant meaning to anything else.
  • Genre used could be seen as the era of 'hippies'. This is due to the fact the outfits, layout, lighting and mise-en-scene all has strong connotations of this.

The monkees- 'A little bit me, a little bit you'
  • The monkees were the first constructed band
  • There music and videos were what set the scene and conventions of what should be expected for music promos e.g. editing, wacky comedy and never-ending action.
  • The video portrayed an idea of surrealism.
  • This band were the first to introduce the idea of telling a story within a music video e.g. narrative.
