Acoustic music is made up and consisted of instruments, which produce very simple but powerful and meaningful sounds, rather than just your normal electrical instruments that create artificial sound. Artists performing while using acoustic instruments need to amplify the volume coming from their instruments, which is why am amplifier is used to create this. An example of this would be placing a microphone in front of their guitar. However, the amplified device still remains separate from the acoustic instrument.
Therefore, the increase in popularity of a television show called 'MTV unplugged' in the 1990s, which contained a vast number of acoustic performances by various artists, who did not normally rely on electronic instruments enabled them to be called 'unplugged' performances.
Connotations of the acoustic genre:
- The mise-en-scene for acoustic videos tends to be located in isolated distant locations away from any other life form. This could be due to the artist wanting to reflect on their life story.
- The camera angles and shots are focused mainly on the artist, this is also used to create complete focus on the artist. Therefore, rather than focusing on possible drama and jump cuts between action shots within the video. There are slow moving shots e.g. establishing shots following the artist around the location as the song develops. There is a vast use of close up shots and extreme close ups, this is to escape into the characters emotions and feelings. The camera position consistently enables the eye line match to meet the audience and the artist. This is used to make the audience feel as if we are of the same importance as the artist.
- The lighting of the mise-en-scene is normally either completely bright and captivating or dull and boring. This is due to the bright lighting represents the location of the artist, and the significance it holds. However, the dark dull lighting makes the artist stand out more compared to its bleak background.
- The props used within the mise-en-scene are kept to a minimal, only very significant things are placed within the background. However, in most cases nothing is placed within the background.
- There is no non diegetic sound used within the piece. All sound used is diegetic sound that is already there e.g. the artist singing.
Some examples of acoustic performances would be:
Corrinne Bailey Rae; 'Put your records on'
Adele - 'Someone like you'
James Morrison -'Broken strings'
Jason Mraz - 'I'm yours'
