Post Modernism: Notes

What is post modernism?
Postmodernism is percieved as old and new, original and un-original.
In the early 1900s, modern developed into post modern.
Postmodernism refers to things that have already happened but refers back to them while looking at them in a different way.

  • The experiment stage of genre is to establish trends e.g experiment on post modern.
  • The cannon stage works within those trends to fix them into our cultural understanding.
  •  The postmodern stage looks at those trends, laughs at them, pokes them with a big stick and adds something new and different to them.
  • Therefore, this creates a new experiment stage, and we go back around the circle.

How can we apply this theory to the history of music:
Experiment stage: Bob Dylan
Cannon stage: Bohemian Rapcidy
Postmodernism stage: Interpreation of a zombie in Micheal Jackson: 'thriller'.

To this day, it is argued that various music videos are a post modern stage of evolution of cinema theatrics.

Therefore, post modernism moves into a new era.
  • Postmodernism becomes the 'new' by refering to the 'old'.
  • Postmodernism in invented by copying.
  • Postmodernism can be created by humerous of terrifying content.
  • Can be created by anyone.
Intertexuality
Intertexuality is the coming together of two different texts. It includes a manipulation of one text refered to another, possibly even mimicked.

There are three types of intertexuality:
  • Homage (Imitation is the highest form of flattery)

Michael Jackson; 'Smooth Criminal'

  • Pastiche (Using the imagery of one text to make a comment about another)

Will Young- 'Switch It on'

  • Parody (Basically taking the mickey)

Backstreet Boys; 'Everybody '
