Firstly, we did a video questionnaire, where we interviewed 3 different candidates, and asked them the following questions above to test our questions. However, although we were successful within the interviews, I thought it would be more beneficial and we would assatain a better understand and a more reliable account of what our target audience really wanted and what they expected from our indie pop music promo video.
Therefore, following up my enquire we then printed out 10 questionnaires to ask ten new candidates and to see what results we got back from them. Therefore, the following results are what we attained from our questionnaire.
1)
From the results it is clear to see that indie pop genre was the most favoured genre, and the most in demand by my intended target audience. Therefore, this has enabled myself to feel confident and reassured by my choice of genre being indie pop. However, it was a surprise that 20 % of the intended audience asked did not mind what genre they listened too. Therefore, this shows that a percentage of 16-24 year old's today, are very optimistic in the variation of music culture. However, a very surprising result, was that pop only attained 10% of the intended audience. This is surprising due to the constant pop music on offer to the intended audience through various music channels dedicated to pop genre alone.
Therefore, this knowledge of the genre that is most in demand by our intended audience, which is actually our chosen genre being indie pop, which will enable myself to build upon the characteristics of the genre, and to really aim to meet the needs and wants of my target audience.
2)
From the results it is clear to see that 'Action and Narrative' and 'People Having Fun (Party)' were the most in demand as they were voted for by 30% each of the target audience each. This is not as unexpected due to previous research on the preliminary task when we copied an indie pop band called 'Fun', on their hit track 'We Are Young'.
However, an expected result that only 20% of the target market asked expected to see an 'Urban and Pop Art Vibe'. This is due to all stereotypical indie pop genre videos all contain individual aspects of them, or things that make them stand out from any other video and different genres. Therefore, by only 20% of my intended audience thinking this should be expected this therefore, makes me ponder upon whether it is actually a strong connotation of what is expected or just a vague expectation that not everyone would consider/recognise when watching a indie genre music video.
Another un-expected result, was that only 20% of our intended audience recognised that an Acoustic singer should be seen in this genre of video. This is down to the rawness and emotion portrayed by indie pop artists when singing a meaningful song. Personally, whenever I happen to watch an indie pop artist singing an acoustic song i almost feel involved with the song, I feel in a sense connected and opened up to by the artists.
Therefore, this knowledge of what is expected of an indie genre will enable myself to focus on what is wanted/expected to be seen e.g. narrative and performance. Therefore, I will aim to include a balanced percentage of each.
3)
From this questionnaire I wanted to find out what type of colours our intended target audience would expect to see. Therefore, it is clear to see that 'Gritty Colours', was the most commonly picked option at 40% by our intended audience. Gritty colours could be described as darker colours possibly grey or dark ash colours, which are more neutral and discreet. The use of these colours makes the focus entirely on the actual artist/band and makes them stand out from the background they are situated in front of, which draws the viewers eye directly on themselves.
However, a surprising result was the 10% that choose 'unusual colouring'. From this option, it is not entirely sure to myself as to what this section of our intended target audience actually want to see. This is due to not being specific enough as to specify what kind of unusual colouring they expect, such as it could be mixed colouring such as two designs put into one. However, it could possibly be rare shades of certain colours that would not usually be thought of.
Another surprising result was the 20% that said they expected 'young people colouring'. This is due to stereotypical assumptions of what is expected and the contrast between older people and younger people and the fashion and trends e.g. colouring which they would like to see.
Therefore, after analysing the results, it has been clear to see what demographics our intended audience wish to see, what colouring they think works well together and what is least favoured. Therefore, I am to include 'gritty' individual colours such as bright mixed patterned shirts to show of the individual personalities of each member of the group.
4)
From this questionnaire I wanted to find out what our intended target audience would think a typical indie location for a music promo video would be set. Therefore, it is clear to see the most popular result was at a 'gig', where the band would be assumed to be performing. This is not a surprising result due to past research of existing indie music videos which an extensive majority of them were set at this type of location.
One surprising result, was the 10% that favoured the location being set 'outside'. I found this result so intriguing due to the non specified statement of it. This is due to the meaning 'outside', could be anywhere and everywhere, it is not specific enough to state where outside. Therefore, I do not feel i am fully aware of what this segment of our intended target audience are expecting to see or what they wish to see. Another surprising result was that only 30% of people asked thought that the location of an indie music video should be set in the 'city'. This is also due to already done research on what is expected, one video in particular The Scripts; 'Man Who Cant Be Moved', shows exactly what I think should be included in an indie music video, in my opinion anyway. This is due to the location being set in a city with an urban vibe associated with it e.g. such as the pop art shown in the city.
Overall, after analysing the result this shows to me that the most favoured options such as 'gig' or 'city' are what is expected. However, due to privacy restrictions of filming in a City and not being able to video particular passers by and their arguments against being filmed in a public setting, we are not able to shoot our promo video within a City or even public place. Another thing to consider is due to myself not having access to locations to shoot possible gigs, we have had to improvise by shooting our performance in a warehouse styled location which could be portrayed as possibly a 'private gig'. Therefore, we're not completely disheartening our audience however, we are having to compromise their needs due to what resources we have access too.

From this questionnaire, it is clear to see that the most chosen prop by our intended audience was 'instruments' at 50%. This is not a surprising result due to existing indie music videos which will always attain some formation of an instrument, whether it simply being one single guitar, while the artist sings acoustic for a duration of the song. One surprising result was the 30% that stated they thought 'street object's' should be placed in the mise-en-scene. This is surprising due to the fact this is hard to classify because of how vague the persons meanings and interpretations could be, almost in some cases completely juxtaposed on one scale to another. Another result which I found intriguing was the 20% of our intended audience who chose 'lots of people' as a prop they would expect to see in a indie genre promo video. This is not surprising however, this result makes me ponder upon what type of people are expected and where they will be placed within the scene juxtaposed to what relevance they attain within the music video. One video in particular which represents the visual images of people surrounding the artist and just being placed there with no real relevance is by The Verve;' Bitter Sweet Symphony'. Therefore, after watching this video I have realised this is not what I want to show within my music video, and that it will not possibly work for my type of music video and the existing ideas already have. However, I am to include instruments within my piece to overall, show I have listened to the needs and wants of my target audience.
6)
From the results it is clear to see the most chosen options are 'smart clothing' at 40% and 'casual clothing' at 50%. This is not a surprising result to say the least, as due to already constructed research these two options are what I know to be expected in indie pop genre music videos.
One surprising results was the 10% that chose 'cowboy' as the type of costumes they expected to see. This is due to every indie genre music video I have watched, I have never seen 'cowboy' clothing such as a cowboy hat. However, I do agree that some of the shirts worn by indie artists could be misinterpreted as cowboy clothing due to the amount of checkered stripes placed upon some individual clothing.
Therefore, I am now 100% happy that I fully understand what I understand the clothing expected due to initial research and now the response from our intended target audience.
7)
From this question, I wanted to find out what was the most favoured indie music video by a particular artist/band. Therefore, this meaning what our target audience already liked/disliked, for my group to then build on this and try and portray the most similar as possible production to what is expected and favoured by our intended audience. It is not a surprising result that The Script, were a very popular selection by our intended audience at 40%. This is very comforting for myself and my group, due to The Script being a 3 piece indie pop band, that wear very casual but individual clothing. Therefore, due to our chosen band selected being a three piece indie pop band, I feel we have met the expectations of our target audience. Another non surprising result was the 20% that selected The Killers, this is due to the band being in a sense very similar to the script, The Killers are a four piece indie band that are also very individual but work together to create the perfect mixture.
One surprising result was the 10% that chose Amy McDonald, this is due to the fact I would personally not actually call her an indie pop artists. This is due to the connotations and everything she represents just does not fit in to what I believe to be the indie genre. Therefore, after analysing these results to this question it is clear to see, that we are hopefully on track for a very successful performance if we stick to everything we already know and have learnt from this questionnaire.
