Indie pop is a genre that is an alternate for rock music that was founded in the United Kingdom in 1980s. Indie itself stands for independent and unique, individual from anything else. The style of indie pop is not for a larger market it is suited to niche markets with individual subcultures and tastes. The indie pop market is mostly aimed at and college and older students, between the age range of 16-24. It is a hybrid genre consisted of two singular genres being pop and indie, making it an alternative to rock music.
Indie culture is not part of the mainstream culture, it breaks away from music that is expected of it, and challenges all extremes.
Conventions of Indie Pop:
- All indie pop music videos are focused on the literal side of the song.
- The location of the mise-en-scene of indie pop videos is seen to be set in urban settings; this could be down to highlighting the immaturity of indie pop artists.
- Camera angles that are vastly used within this genre are close ups representing the artists emotions and feelings they are trying to portray. Point of view shots are also used to show more of the location from the artists persepective. Along with establishing shots are commonly used when panning the camera around the mise-en-scene to get a real feel of the artists environment they are located in, and the relevance it has to the piece.
- The location the artist's is positioned in is right in the middle of the shot preferably meeting eye line of the intended audience therefore, this enables us to connect with the artist and reason with them on their level.
- The editing techniques used are of fast cuts between drama taking place this is used to link the narrative to the storyline, along with creates tension due to the pace of the drama taking place juxtaposed to the pace of the non diegetic sound going from low to high.
- The mise-en-scene such as the costumes used within the genre are of a smart/casual vibe, e.g. shirts and chino trousers or suits which are dimmed down with casual shirts.
- The demographics used such as the colours within the mise-en-scene are of dark shades such as neutral colours or darker colours representing the mystery of this side of genre.
- The narrative to the piece is normally focussed on a boy/girl love story that is developing within the peice. This or the artist is singing about the girl he/she has lost. This is represented through 'The Script; Man Who Can't Be Moved':
This is also a representation of all the conventions of an indie pop music video, due to the mise-en-scene being the location set in an urban setting, added to the close up and establishing shots used to represent the location and the link it has to the lyrics within the song. The video is also focussed on the lyrical side of it down to the lryics saying 'Man who can't be moved'. The artist represents this by standing on the corner and not moving until his love comes back to him.
This research carried out on the indie pop genre will influence the questions used on our audience research due to the questions, we now know as a group we now need to ask our intended audience.
I have now identified everything that is expected such as mise-en-scene e.g. demographics, clothing, location etc. Therefore, it is essential to put these within the intended questions used within our questionnaire. This is to see if our intended audience would actually recognise these connotations as aspects of the stereotypical indie pop genre.
